Top-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal cruised into the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon on Thursday at the Mexico Open in Acapulco.
Nadal did have some issues with his serve, facing eight break points, but he saved all eight and broke Kwon on four of six opportunities. He completed victory in 91 minutes.
In the semifinals, Nadal will face seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who downed third-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-4, 6-4. Dimitrov converted three of six opportunities to break Wawrinka.
The other semifinal will feature a pair of Americans in No. 5 John Isner and Taylor Fritz. Isner survived countryman and qualifier Tommy Paul 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, while Fritz downed Great Britain's Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-3.
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
Top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia made quick work of seventh-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov in Dubai, winning 6-2, 6-2 in just 68 minutes to reach the semifinals.
Djokovic was broken once -- after squandering a set point in the first set -- but he broke Khachanov five times, including in the final game of both sets.
His opponent in the semifinals will be No. 3 Gael Monfils, who dispatched fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3.
The other semifinal will pit No. 2 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece against Great Britain's Daniel Evans. Tsitsipas battled back to beat Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Evans took down Russian sixth seed Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6 (9).
Top seed and home crowd favorite Cristian Garin recovered to defeat Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (4) in a wild Round of 16 match in Santiago, Chile.
The match featured 13 breaks of service, the 11th of which came after Garin squandered two match points while up 5-4 in the third set. Both players promptly lost their serve in the next two games to force the tiebreaker, where Garin went up 6-2 before finally converting his fifth match point.
In the quarterfinals, Garin will face Brazilian wild card Thiago Seyboth Wild, who upset fifth-seeded Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina 7-6 (7), 6-4.
Third-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain also moved on to the quarterfinals, beating Peruvian lucky loser Juan Pablo Varillas 7-6 (3), 6-2. He'll face Brazilian eighth seed Thiago Monteiro, who beat Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 6-4.
